BACKING

We have been backing horses and ponies in since 1994 (before we were established as horse trainers) because we are light weight and effective riders with good knowledge of horse behaviour.

We always back and ride away rather than 'break' and start with introducing the horse to long reins, saddle and bridle. We then lean over and gradually sit up. We always back in a team of at least two to keep the horses calm and happy. To see what we do,  take a look at our Facebook videos.

The best time for backing livery is in the summer, we can still back in the winter but the weather complicates things and it's ideal to get the horses happy with a rider without having to get used to inclement weather too!

£200 P/C/W

Weekly payments to be sent each week from the day the horse arrives.

Plus any additional feed (basic feed provided) and vet and farrier fees.

Includes approximately 5 sessions a week either in a 60 x 30 arena or out on good hacking with canters and quiet lanes. Will include ground work sessions and long reining.

We usually say that it takes about three weeks to go from unbacked to cantering on a hack but every horse is different so we ask for the owners to be flexible with this.

Testimonial

"I sent my pony to Meg and Lauren to be backed. I was worried about everything! Sent lots of messages asking lots of questions before I sent him and they answered all my worries and concerns and made me feel at ease and I felt 100% sure that they were the right place to send my little blonde boy! Charlie settled quickly with them, I was sent updates on what he was doing and how he was doing. The girls really love the horses like their own and that made me so happy and knew he was in the best hands possible. Charlie is home and although my daughter is still working up the courage to ride him, (she’s sat on him and he’s perfect) he is so patient and I know he’s going to be an awesome pony. Thank you so much."

SALES

We have sold numerous horses and ponies so we know how to work both horses and adverts to be as eye catching as possible.

We will always evaluate a horse and wouldn't sell on any merits that we haven't discovered for ourselves (any previous problems are disclosed to potential buyers). Every horse who arrives at Little Hesteyri is immediately loved as one of our own so we strive to find the best possible home which often involves delivering the horse to insure that the new owner is everything they claim to be.

We have sold horses within a week of arriving with us before and some have taken several months. This depends on how saleable the horse is at the point of arrival, how much training we have to do and how reasonable the price is but generally, we say our average is about a month.

We find that the best time for sales livery is spring and summer, people start looking at the beginning of the competition season, after the winter rain has stopped! If selling a hunter type though, the best time is Autumn in our experience!

£175 P/C/W Plus 10% of Sale Price

Plus any additional feed (basic feed provided) and entry, vet and farrier fees.

Includes approximately 5 sessions a week either in a 60 x 30 arena or out on good hacking with canters and quiet lanes. May include ground work sessions, advertisement over any free platforms and on Horsemart (business membership including paid advertisements). Our fees also include high quality pictures and videos.

 â€‹REHABILITATION

Rehab livery can include the initial treatment and wound care and the recovery period. We have seen a whole range of injuries and wounds and take our veterinary care very seriously, working with B&W Equine Vets to help your horse get better as quickly as possible.

When the wound or injury has healed, we can then build the horse back up in ridden work. We start with gentle walking with a slowly increasing length. Then we step up to trot work and hill work.

£200 P/C/W Post injury recovery period

Testimonial!

During [their] time with us, [they] were working as a stud hand, [their] duties were to help care for mares in foal and yearlings. This included mucking out, checking yearlings at grass, helping with veterinary care and the farrier. [They] always maintained an exceptional level of professionalism when working with our vets, farriers and other members of staff.

[They were] very good at handling the mares and foals, [they were] a great team player and fitted in well with the existing team, performing all the duties asked of [them] with great enthusiasm and attention to detail. I consider [them] to be a valuable member of the team, who consistently achieved good results and delivers and exceeds all expectations.

COACHING

We are happy to teach a variety of different types and ages of riders and have a UKCC level 2 qualification. We have taught many children, adolescents and adults anything from flatwork to gymkhana and everything in between and focus on developing the bond between horse and rider to enable you to take on anything with your equine partner!

Lauren has a degree in psychology which she uses to help overcome confidence knocks, help set goals and work on the mental side of riding as well as the physical!

We run clinics on show jumping and cross country at several different venues including Moores Farm Equestrian Centre and ACE Cross Country, details of when these rallies are taking place will be on our Facebook events page or you can contact us and we'll let you know if we have anything planned!

£30 Per Person/Per Hour At Little Hesteyri.
£40 per Person/Per Hour At a different venue (discounts for groups).

“This [horse riding] is something I had feared for a while, being around horses and riding them was one of my biggest fears! But with the help of Meg and Lauren, I was able to conquer a fear of mine, they didn't throw me in at the deep end and force me on a horse, they warmed me up to them!”

TRAINING

We are well known for training horses and ponies out of issues they may have. We've dealt with "unrideable" horses, horses that won't jump, horses with vices under saddle that they've had all their lives.

The reason we have had so much success with problem horses is because we don't try to "break" horses or "show them who's boss". Rather, we show them that they have nothing to fear from us and find the solution.

Before sending your horse away for re-schooling, we ask any owners that the horse has it's teeth, back and saddle checked. Owners must be open to further investigations for severe behavioural problems, and we ideally need all previous veterinary work ups to help us diagnose the problem.

We have ridden all types of difficult horses, for some, they were deemed dangerous and we were their last chance.

"Took my ConnemaraxThoroughbred to them for 2 weeks - he had been putting in a few unsettling bucks with me and so hadn't been ridden for 6 weeks ..... they worked wonders! He hasn't put a foot wrong since being back with me - is calm and well mannered whilst being ridden and is also much more polite on the ground. Well done girls - cannot recommend you highly enough! Thank you!"

Testimonial!

When I first met Lauren it was at a local show where her pony was being difficult. I gave her some help with her pony after the show was over and was instantly impressed with her determination to get it right. I taught Lauren on this pony and she went on to produce this pony to become a regular winner at jumping shows all around our area and I am sure it was largely down to her determination at this very early stage that she helped reform this pony into a now valuable member, without her it could have been a very different outcome for him.

Lauren has a bubbly personality that is easy to like but in my opinion there is also a patient determination to achieve that shines through and separates her from the rest.

"My horse just came back from 4 weeks at Hesteyri to help him be calm and sane out hacking. They have done a really good job with him; they ride sympathetically, are genuine all rounders and really care about all the horses. They did everything they said they would and more. They took me on a hack towards the end of Ronnie's stay and gave me tips about how I could cope with any future problems, and they also took him to his first ever jumping show. There were lots of pictures so I could see how things were going, and I enjoyed the amusing daily progress report so much that I'm still following it, even though Ronnie's back with me now!"

GROUNDWORK

We do groundwork with all the horses we train as it is important to develop the trust bond between horses and people. In addition to working on prime aspects of schooling, such as long-reining, we also challenge issues such as loading and catching, with plenty of experience with young or 'rude' horses.

We help clients to improve a personal bond with their horse or pony, accepting that they know their horse or pony best, and working with them together to overcome issues and improve their relationship.

£175 P/C/W

Plus any additional feed (basic feed provided) and entry, vet and farrier fees.

Includes approximately 5 sessions a week. Can include work with a Dually (Monty Roberts) halter, long reining, lunging, loading practice and loose jumping.

SCHOOLING

Schooling covers many different bases but when we say 'schooling', we usually mean teaching to jump or to go more fluidly on the flat, honing your horse's skills, rather than training them out of any bad habits or problematic behaviour.

We have experience with many different levels of horses in many different disciplines and are happy to work with any horse regardless of behaviour, size, breed or ability!

The best time for this is usually over winter, which gives the opportunity to start the season with a freshly tune up horse!

"My TB Bobs spent a fabulous 3 weeks with Lauren & Meg. He needed to work on his confidence on a hack and balance during flat work/jumping. A lot to ask but I now have him home and he has re-found his brave pants hacking and I’m loving his amazing balanced trot and canter. I can’t recommend Hesteyri Horses enough. Excellent caring riders who really care about every horse they work with. I will hopefully take him back next year for more excellent training - 5 stars .”

"High standards, great values. Lauren & Meg provide a high quality of service which is what led me to ask if they'd keep my pony on their yard whilst I work in the city. I know she'll receive the same care I would give my pony if I could, plus their riding is of such a standard that they're some of the few I'm happy to allow to exercise her regularly - and know my pony won't be too much for them to handle either! Besides that, Lauren in particular has done wonders for my riding confidence over the years and both girls exhibit a way with horses I have seen few replicate, they have worked wonders with a variety of horses in their short time as a business and I can't wait to see what wonders they'll work in the future.”

COMPETITION

We have experience with competing plenty of levels of horses in many different disciplines and are happy to work with any horse and to get them competing to the best of their abilities.

We are affiliated British Show Jumping and British Eventing and have participated in unaffiliated and affiliated events including county level showing, mounted games, dressage, eventing and show jumping.

We are not worried about going to a higher or lower level or trying something new depending on where a horse's abilities lie.

If you need help with a horse or pony, please feel free to email or call us. We will always try to help, even if that means payment plans or just offering free advice

Before sending your horse away for reschooling we ask any owners that the horse has its teeth, back and saddle checked. Most horses need their teeth doing by a vet or dentist once a year but some may need them doing every six months. Most horses in work should have their back looked at by a physiotherapist, a chiropractor, a muscle release therapist or an osteopath every 3 months.

We also ask that each horse comes with their own fitting tack and rugs. A charge of £15 per item (bridle, saddle, rug) will incur for any tack or equipment we have to provide, this is to cover wear and tear on our own equipment. As with anything else, please get in touch if you have any questions or problems and we will do our best to resolve them.
